Trimbakeshwar Temple Nashik
History, Significance & Spiritual Importance
Trimbakeshwar Temple (त्र्यंबकेश्वर)
Located in the village of Trimbak, just 36 kilometers from Nashik, the Trimbakeshwar Temple is a renowned pilgrimage site. It is famously known as the origin point of the sacred Godavari River and is home to one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.
According to legend, the sage Gautam Rishi performed intense penance (tapasya) on the Brahmagiri Hill, which overlooks the present-day temple. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him and brought the holy rivers—Ganga, Gautami, and Godavari—down to earth from heaven.
The temple structure was built by a knight serving the Peshwas, named Mr. Odhekar. Major processions and celebrations (utsav) are held here during festivals like Ramnavami, Dasara, and Chaitra Padwa (the Hindu New Year). Built with black stone, the temple stands out for its unique architecture. It is believed that visiting Trimbakeshwar grants salvation to the devotee.
