Ramkund, Trimbak
The Holy Tank for Pind Daan & Shraddha Ceremonies
Ramkund
Situated in Trimbak village, just 36 kilometers from Nashik, this local attraction is defined by the revered Trimbakeshwar Temple and its recognition as the originating point of the sacred Godavari River. As one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, this particular shrine holds the distinction of being considered the main Jyotirlinga.
Historical & Legendary Significance
The historical and legendary roots of this sacred site trace back to Sage Gautam Rishi, who performed a rigorous ritual of prayer and intense penance (tapasya) on Brahmagiri Hill, which rises above the present-day temple. According to local lore, Lord Shiva was deeply pleased with this devotion and blessed the sage by bringing down to earth from heaven the sacred rivers of Ganga, Gautami, and Godavari. Historically, the temple structure was built by the late Mr. Odhekar, a knight serving under the Peshwas.
Architectural & Local Highlights
Architecturally, this local attraction stands out for its unique construction using black stones. The temple hosts grand processions and celebrations (utsav) during major festivals, including Ramnavami, Dasara, and Chaitra Padwa, which marks the Hindu New Year.
