The Sacred Shiva Shrine in the Sahyadri Hills
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga – Nature & Pilgrimage Guide
Bhimashankar Temple is one of the twelve revered Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the Ghat region of the Sahyadri hills, it is situated approximately 127 kilometers from Pune and 50 kilometers northwest of Khed in Maharashtra. The temple holds immense spiritual significance as it is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima River, which flows southeast and eventually merges with the Krishna River near Raichur.
Temple Architecture & History
The Bhimashankar Temple is a beautiful composite of old and new structures, built in the Nagara style of architecture. The temple showcases the excellence of skills achieved by ancient Vishwakarma sculptors, featuring intricate carvings and graceful design. The main shrine dates back to the 13th century, while the Sabha Mandap (assembly hall) and the Shikhara (tower) were developed in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis. The great Maratha ruler Shivaji is said to have made generous endowments to this temple to facilitate regular worship services. A unique Roman-style bell, presented by Chimaji Appa (brother of Bajirao Peshwa), can be seen hanging in front of the temple. Although the current structure is relatively new, references to the Bhimashankaram shrine appear in literature dating back to the 13th century CE, and the revered Saint Jñāneshwar is said to have visited this sacred site.
Wildlife & Nature Experience
Bhimashankar is not just a pilgrimage destination but also a paradise for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. The temple is located within the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, which spans approximately 120 square kilometers and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Western Ghats. The sanctuary is home to a rich variety of endemic and endangered species. The Indian Giant Squirrel (the state animal of Maharashtra) is the star attraction here, and visitors can also spot the elusive Giant Flying Squirrel, various species of birds, reptiles, and other wildlife. The sanctuary offers lush green forests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic views of the surrounding hills, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
Trekking Opportunities
Bhimashankar is one of the most scenic trekking destinations in Maharashtra, especially during the monsoon season. The trek takes you through dense forests, rivers, and waterfalls, eventually leading to the ancient Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple. There are several trekking routes to choose from:
